Project Overview

From Serra da Estrela to Science

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park (PNSE) is one of Portugal's most significant phytodiversity reserves. PharmaStar develops pharmaceutical formulations for diabetes prevention and treatment using PNSE flora with advanced nanotechnology- based drug delivery systems.

The research utilizes biopolymers from acorns and propolis in microparticles, nanoparticles, and liposomes. Five PNSE plant species with anti-diabetic properties are primary targets:

  • Carqueja (Pterospartum tridentatum)
  • Cistus (Cistus ladanifer)
  • Holy Thistle (Cynara cardunculus)
  • Elder (Sambucus nigra)
  • Juniper (Juniperus communis)

Additional PNSE flora undergoes screening for therapeutic potential.

Methodology

Methodology & Validation

Methodology & Validation

Data collection includes plant sampling, botanical mapping, and ethnobotanical surveys. Metabolomic analysis identifies anti-diabetic compounds for development.

Pharmaceutical formulations combine commercial drugs with plant extracts to optimize synergistic effects. Validation follows systematic testing:

  • In-vitro studies
  • In-vivo animal models
  • Preliminary clinical trials

Expected Outcomes

Advancing Science and Sustainability in Drug Development

PharmaStar enhances understanding of PNSE natural products' pharmaceutical potential while developing diabetes treatments.

The project contributes to sustainable regional development through natural resource valorization and scientific knowledge transfer to the pharmaceutical industry.
